Open design

Open design involves the public open source development of products, services and systems. ’Open design software’ is referred to simply as open source software.

Open design is usually a participatory design process involving many stakeholders and can be referred to as co-operative design. It involves a culture of transparency, trust, inclusion, sharing, and reciprocity. Corresponding licenses allow for free use, distribution, and modification.

Example open design projects include Arduino electronic circuit boards, the TABBY EVO electric vehicle platform, and the sustainability plant-based foods project Next Billion Burgers.

The potential for open design can be expanded with metadesign.
